Crush Your New Year Fitness Goals on Snowshoes

For years I’ve made it a New Year’s Resolution to exercise more. Just the word “exercise” feels daunting. After several fails, I changed my focus and made it a goal to get outside more, have fun, and not call it exercise. I figured if I found ways to enjoy myself, exercise and fitness would fall naturally into place. Guess what? It worked. I’m in better shape now than I was two years ago just by changing my focus to getting out and doing the things I enjoy.

For those living in colder climates, January can be a rough month to start a  fitness plan. It’s easy to hunker down next to a warm fire with a cozy blanket and good book. But winter snowstorms bring beauty with a whole new world to explore and I can’t think of a better way than snowshoeing. A small learning curve means that anyone who can walk will easily learn the sport. The hardest part is getting on the snowshoes. Once on, it’s simply of matter of walking in them. Not difficult at all.

Be prepared to walk through breathtaking scenery while listening to the squeaking snow under the snowshoes. One of the things I love about snowshoeing is staying warm, even on brisk winter days with temperatures in the low teens. Think layers when dressing for snowshoeing. I often take off hats and gloves once I get moving.

The sun helps my body absorb vitamin D which I often get low on during the winter months. I get so busy taking in the scenery and laughing with friends that I hardly notice the miles. On my last outing, I racked up nine miles on snowshoes. Wow! A great workout that crushes fitness goals all under the guise of fun.

Don’t have a pair of snowshoes? REI rents them or check with your local outdoor retailer. Try before you buy but don’t be surprised if you get hooked after the first time. A few words of caution: Check the local avalanche forecast and stay away from slopes. Always travel on known trails. Many summer hiking trails make great winter snowshoeing trails.
